Samsung Daejeon Volleyball

I love team sports. Correction, I never really played them as a kid (I was a cross-country kid), but I LOVE to watch them. Theres just something about sitting in a stadium with hundreds of screaming fans watching teams battle it out. I love being in those crowds. Since being in Korea I've been to pro baseball, soccer, and now volleyball games. Korean crowds are awesome, and tickets for pretty much ANY sport are SUPER cheap, so I would recommend checking out some sports if you're into that type of thing, it's a great cheap activity!

Monday night Kristin, Jenny, Andy, Sunny and I went to a Daejeon volleyball game. It was so much fun, and really made me remember why I'm such a fan of the game. My love of volleyball probably goes back to Elementary school. Volleyball was the one sport where I was half-decent at. Our school got 2nd in the Ontario volleyball championships (granted it was probably out of 3 or 4 schools, but we were the smallest one!). I kind of forgot about my love of it until my last two years of high school when I started going to volleyball tournaments with my good friend Rachel. Because of volleyball I ended up going to Redeemer to watch a tournament, I fell in love with the school and applied. There are so many reasons why I have warm feelings towards the sport.

In University I continued watching volleyball and was able to watch the Redeemer Royals spike their way to a bronze medal in my final year. Since then I haven't been to a volleyball game, until Monday night.

The great thing about sports is that they are fun to watch in any language. You don't have to know Korean to know when your team gets a point, or to know when to cheer. Even though all the names are in Korean you can still cheer at the top of your lungs for their numbers. Sports transcend language barriers.

It was so much fun going to the volleyball game with the group I went with. Jenny and Sunny probably cheered JUST as loud as me. Korean fans in general are CRAZY! They cheer SO loud and have all sorts of songs and cheers. It's great! Jenny is probably the biggest fan I've ever seen. She knows all the players names, and brought the star player muffins. I found it hysterical watching her scream "GARBIIINNNNNNNN" (or Gavin for you non-Koreans), at the top of her lungs. We got to talk to him after the game and her face just lit up. It was also hilarious to see a little Korean woman next to a 6ft. 8 foreign volleyball player. Even Andy looked like a midget compared to this guy!

I'm a little sad I found out about the team so late in the season (playoffs start next week), but at least now we don't have to wait for exciting playoff games! Also, the Daejeon team clinched 3rd, so they're in the playoffs for sure! Can't wait to go back for some more fantastic volleyball (and at 7 bucks a game...you really can't beat it!) I'll keep ya'll updated on their progress! :)

Until next time friends...watch some Hockey for me.

xx Peace & Love xx
